Axis ships a global shutter camera and a broad summer product wave

AXIS P1486-LE brings a CMOS global shutter to surveillance, alongside new fisheyes, a bispectral camera, and 4K bullets and mini-domes.

Axis pushed its summer wave into distribution, and one camera in it is genuinely new territory: the AXIS P1486-LE, described as the first global shutter camera in video surveillance.

Why a global shutter matters

Nearly every surveillance camera uses a rolling shutter, reading the sensor line by line. Fast-moving subjects skew and blur, which is why plate capture on moving vehicles is its own engineering problem. A CMOS global shutter exposes the whole frame at once, so fast-moving objects come out distortion-free without rolling-shutter artifacts. Axis pairs the P1486-LE with its edge-based License Plate Verifier analytics for vehicle access control and free-flow traffic, offered with a 60-day trial. For gate automation, parking, and logistics sites, this is the direct application.

The rest of the wave

The release also includes the AXIS M4337-PLVE (6MP, 2464x2464) and M4338-PLVE (12MP, 3536x3536) fisheye cameras for 180 and 360-degree coverage, and the AXIS Q2802-E bispectral camera, which pairs a VGA thermal sensor with a 4K optical sensor in one housing for perimeter work. On the volume end there is the M2048-LE 8MP bullet (4K at 15fps, IP66/IP67) and several M3098 8MP AI mini-domes.

The read

Axis remains the default specification in a lot of Canadian public-sector and enterprise work, and this wave covers the practical gaps: true plate capture at speed, wide-area coverage without multi-sensor cost, and thermal-plus-optical in one device. The P1486-LE is the one to trial first, because it addresses a failure mode that better resolution alone never fixed.
