Every IP camera, reader controller, and intercom in a modern security system rides on structured cabling, and TIA-568 is the standard family that defines what “done right” means for that cabling. Security integrators who treat it as an IT-only concern hand their failures to the most expensive part of the project: intermittent devices that pass a continuity check and drop under PoE load.
What the family covers
TIA-568 is a set of documents covering the pieces of a cabling plant: overall topology and design, balanced twisted-pair components and performance categories, and optical fibre. In Canada the CSA T529 series has historically mirrored the TIA content, which is why Canadian specifications cite either. The practical payload for the security trade is a small set of rules: recognized categories and what performance each guarantees, the 90 metre permanent link and 100 metre channel limits, topology (horizontal runs home to a telecommunications room, not daisy-chained), and minimum bend radius and termination practices that preserve the category rating you paid for.
The parts security installers actually use
Category selection. Category 6 covers the overwhelming majority of camera and access control runs. Category 6A earns its premium where 90W PoE bundles run together, where 10 Gb uplinks matter, or where the owner’s IT standard demands it. Our Cat6A versus fibre guide covers the decision in detail.
The 100 metre wall. The channel limit is not a suggestion, and the camera at 140 metres is the security trade’s most repeated design failure. The clean answers are a closer telecommunications room, fibre with a media converter or PoE extender designed for the job, or purpose-built long-reach solutions, each with trade-offs the design should own explicitly.
Certification, not verification. A wire-map tester proves pins connect. A certification tester proves the link meets its category’s performance limits, and that report is what a specification means when it demands “test results per TIA-568.” On any project of consequence, price certified testing in. It is also your defence when a camera drops and the vendor blames the network.
What trips people up
Termination discipline is most of it: untwist kept to a minimum, jacket landed properly, bend radius respected, separation from power maintained. A Cat6 plant installed with Cat5 habits tests like Cat5. The second trap is treating patch cords and field terminations as exempt; the channel is only as good as its worst link. The third is documentation: labelled, recorded links per the companion administration standard turn every future service call from an archaeology dig into a lookup.
How it fits
TIA-568 defines the transport layer that ONVIF video and OSDP access control traffic ride on. Get the cabling right and the systems above it inherit that reliability; get it wrong and no protocol will save you.
