IP-native intercoms and access
Overview
Sur-Gard is a Canadian-origin brand of central station alarm receiving equipment, originally an independent Canadian central station receiver manufacturer, acquired by Digital Security Controls in 1990 and now owned and marketed by Johnson Controls as part of its security infrastructure portfolio. Sur-Gard receivers, including the SG-System I, SG-System III, SG-System IV, and SG-System 5, are the backbone of professional alarm monitoring centres across Canada and internationally, receiving and processing alarm signals transmitted from intrusion and fire alarm panels via telephone, IP, cellular, and radio paths. The SG-System 5 is the current flagship, capable of receiving millions of alarm events per hour with full redundancy, and supports the SIA DC-09 IP protocol, Contact ID, and numerous proprietary formats. Sur-Gard receivers are required for ULC-listed monitoring stations in Canada, making them foundational infrastructure in the Canadian alarm industry.
Johnson Controls’ security and fire portfolio came largely through the 2016 Tyco merger: Software House (C•CURE, the incumbent enterprise access platform in much of finance and critical infrastructure), Kantech (Montreal-built mid-market access control), DSC (Toronto-heritage intrusion panels, among the most installed in Canada), Simplex (engineered fire alarm), and Exacq and Illustra on the video side. Few companies touch as many Canadian buildings across as many product tiers.
The Canadian angle is unusually strong: Kantech and DSC both originated here and retain Canadian engineering footprints, and Simplex’s fire business runs a national branch network. Buyers evaluating JCI platforms tend to weigh the depth of the installed base and branch support against the integration complexity of a portfolio assembled from many acquisitions.
